色石(カラーストーン)の選び方

How to choose colored stones

Colored stones come in a wide variety of colors, and even the same gemstone can have different shades.
For example, sapphire. It is often thought of as a blue gemstone, but it also comes in a variety of colors, including pink, orange, and green. The same mineral, but with a red color, is called a ruby, but all other types are called sapphires.
Even among blue sapphires, there are those with deep colors, those with pale colors, and even those with a purplish blue color, and each one has its own unique character, so encountering a colored stone is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

4. NozomiChoose by gender

Gemstones are full of romance, discovered by explorers. Among them, there are some that are rarely found or can no longer be mined. Rare stones continue to fascinate people with their rarity and beauty. Some are more expensive than diamonds, and their market prices have skyrocketed several times over in recent years. We have compiled a list of some of the most common rare stones and their characteristics.

パライバトルマリン Paraiba tourmaline

One of the three rarest stones, it has an attractive, vibrant neon blue color. It originated from mining in the state of Paraiba, Brazil, but large, high-quality Paraiba is extremely rare. As a result, Brazilian Paraiba tourmalines are very expensive, with high-quality ones costing over 1 million yen per carat. Paraiba is also mined in Africa, but many of its stones are paler in color and are traded at lower prices than Brazilian stones.

アレキサンドライト alexandrite

It is one of the three rarest stones and is known for its color-change effect. It is said to be "emerald by day, ruby by night," and its attractive color change from greenish in sunlight to a purplish reddish color in incandescent light. Its dark, cool impression makes it a popular gemstone among men. It is also designated as the June birthstone and the 45th wedding anniversary stone. High-quality stones with few inclusions and a clear color change are highly valued and traded at high prices.

パパラチアサファイア Padparadscha Sapphire

It is one of the three rarest stones, and its charm lies in its soft pink to orange hue, like that of the lotus flower (padparadscha). If the pink is too strong, it becomes pink sapphire, and if the orange is too strong, it becomes orange sapphire, so the rarity of the subtle shades in between makes them popular, and the price is significantly higher.
However, the color ranges from pink to orange, so choose the color that suits your taste.
Also, please be aware that some appraisal institutions will recognize Padparadscha sapphires and others will not. Padparadscha sapphires are mainly produced in Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Like rubies and sapphires, they are usually heat-treated. Unheated rubies and sapphires, which are beautiful even without heat treatment, are scarce in circulation and trade at high prices.

タンザナイト Tanzanite

Discovered in Tanzania in 1967, Tiffany&It quickly became popular after being named "Tanzanite" by the Tanzanite & Co., Ltd. The tanzanite traded on the market is only mined in Tanzania. It is a stone similar to sapphire, but unlike sapphire, it appears purple depending on the angle. In addition to its purplish blue color, some also show pleochroic reddish hues, giving it a mysterious impression. It is also designated as the birthstone for December.

クリソベリルキャッツアイ Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye

Cat's eye is characterized by a ray of light that resembles a cat's eye (chatoyancy effect). While the chatoyancy effect can be seen in other gemstones such as alexandrite and aquamarine, chrysoberyl cat's eye is in a class of its own. Stones with a beautiful cat's eye line or stones with a lustrous apple green or honey color are traded at high prices. It is the birthstone for February and is a gem that is perfect for Japanese clothing.

アウイナイト Apatite

This rare stone, with its beautiful, vibrant cobalt blue sparkle, is only found in Germany. Only small pieces are mined, most of which are less than 0.1 carat. However, even pieces under 0.1 carat have a striking vibrant blue color, making them popular as an accent in jewelry. Another attractive feature is the orange color that appears when exposed to black light. While this gemstone has a relatively high number of inclusions, the fewer the inclusions and the darker and more vibrant the stone, the higher the price.

インペリアルトパーズ Imperial Topaz

Topaz is relatively inexpensive, but Imperial Topaz is in a class of its own. As its name suggests, it means "emperor" among topazes. Most of it comes from Brazil. While topazes are usually artificially treated, Imperial Topaz is not, resulting in an attractive sherry color ranging from red to orange to pink.Imperial topaz comes in many colors, but bright, vivid, reddish imperial topaz is traded at particularly high prices.

The three most popular colored stones, ruby, sapphire, and emerald, all have names attached to them, especially if they are of high quality. Stones with these special names have high market value and are traded at high prices.

*There are many appraisal agencies around the world, but some are more likely to issue special designations. Since standards vary depending on the appraisal agency, we recommend purchasing one that comes with an appraisal certificate from a reputable appraisal agency.

ピジョンブラッドルビー Pigeon Blood Ruby

Ruby is a well-known colored stone. Only the "red" variety of the same mineral is called ruby, and all other colors are called sapphires. Among them, only rubies with high transparency and a deep, beautiful red color are called pigeon's blood, and their value increases dramatically. Furthermore, unheated stones from Myanmar (formerly Burma) are traded at the highest prices.

宝石自体の魅力 Royal Blue Sapphire/Cornflower Sapphire

Sapphires come in a variety of colors, including pink, orange, yellow, and violet, in addition to blue. The most representative of these is blue sapphire. Among them, a strong, vivid, deep blue is called "royal blue" and is considered to be of the highest quality. Sapphires that are brighter and more vibrant than royal blue are called "cornflower." These also fetch higher prices than regular blue sapphires. Like rubies, unheated stones from Myanmar (formerly Burma) are even more valuable.

宝石自体の魅力 Oil-free emerald

Emeralds are gemstones with many inclusions. Therefore, they are impregnated to make the inclusions less noticeable and increase transparency. Most emeralds are impregnated, but non-oil emeralds are beautiful even without this treatment. They are extremely rare and more durable, so their price rises dramatically. If they are from Colombia, their value increases even more.
